Open the garage to organization
Organizing a garage involves more than cleaning it out and putting things back in neater piles. It requires culling your possessions and devising a plan for handling what’s left, and it takes time and work.
But if you do it right, you’ll be better able to keep things under control. And that means you won’t have to do it again.

Get the most out of your garage
If you find your garage filled with clutter and items you’ve been saving for years, you’re not alone. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that 25 percent of people with two-car garages don’t have room to park any cars inside, and 32 percent only have room for one vehicle.
We asked Sabrina Soto, host of “Get It Sold” on HGTV, for her best garage organization tips.
“First, you have to figure out what you have,” Soto says. “Today people aren’t just using their garage for cars. It’s for seasonal storage and tools. Even stuff people don’t want in their house, they move it to their garage.
”Then, move everything out. Get rid of the things you haven’t touched in a year. If you haven’t used it in that time, or most likely won’t use it, donate it.“
Soto suggests figuring out what seasonal items there are. ”Put decorations together; workshop, tools and supplies together; and once you have everything in these piles on your garage floor, then you’ll see what size storage boxes you need,” she says.

Maximize storage areas by getting organized
This time of year, I get calls about getting organized around the home. A lot are prompted by people who just finished putting away all the holiday decorations and realize they need better storage systems to make it easier to find things.
But with all the “stuff” around the home, you may be wondering, “Where do I start?” Most of my callers seem to want to focus on three areas of the home: the garage, basement and closets.
Obviously, the first thing to do is to get rid of the things you don’t need or seldom use. Having a garage sale, donating usable items to a local charity, or even taking them to the city or township dump or recycling center is the first step, because the less stuff you have to store, the easier the organizing will be.
Garage organization seems to be one of the hot topics these days. There are companies that specialize in helping homeowners organize just their garage. But with a little planning and some elbow grease, you can get your garage in order yourself.

Here’s a good article on some “out of the box” thinking about garage storage options. Low tech solutions to increase your usable storage space are always a winner.
The holidays are over and you’re ready to store those Christmas decorations for next year. With the cold weather here, now is the perfect time to clean out those storage areas.
Most garages double as storage areas and some are so storage-oriented the family vehicle no longer fits.
As a result, many garages become overrun with tools, lawn and sports equipment and children’s toys. Unfortunately, areas that become overly cluttered can pose a real fire hazard.
Here are some tips for organizing your storage areas-whether they be a shed, garage or spare bedroom.
Go into your storage space and look up. Your area may have potential for overhead storage.
An overhead beam or pole can be installed to hang light items such as bicycles, life jackets or bundled extension cords. This helps get items off the floor. Even a nail is strong enough to support a lawn chair.

Making room in the garage to park your car worthwhile
I can’t tell you how many people I saw scraping snow and ice off of their cars during this past snowstorm. The slippery roads also allowed cars parked on streets to be potential targets if other cars were to slide into them. And cars parked outside are, of course, more likely to be broken into.

We can avoid these frustrations if we park our cars in garages. While I recognize that not everyone has a garage, many who do have them so filled with stuff that they can’t get their cars into them.
Clear the clutter to get most out of garage
If the season’s first snowfall has always meant a frantic search for that long-forgotten snow shovel, it might be necessary to organize your garage.
