As the weather gets colder, staying indoors is a reality. Instead of getting bored at home, observe each room and make a list of items no longer needed. Go to your local retailer and purchase some storage containers. You can visit each room of your home and see what is no longer needed or has not been used in years. Go through your clothing and decide what you could sell or donate to a local charity. After boxing up these items, place them in the garage or a storage unit. As spring arrives, you will have more time to enjoy the great outdoors and be ready for the yearly garage sale.

Storage Can Be a Problem for All Those Holiday Gifts; Attic, Garage, Closet or Self Storage?

Here Are Some Tips from Our Attic Storage on Storage Containers for Storing Your “Stuff” After the Holidays

LEWISVILLE, Texas–EON: Enhanced Online News–Throw it away, give it away or store it somewhere—attic, garage, closet or self-storage. Those are the choices we’ll all face as the holidays fade into memory, particularly those of us already cramped for space.

“Our mobile storage containers are perfect for storing all those items you only need occasionally like holiday decorations, seasonal clothing, toys and sports equipment, or family keepsakes”

Bulging closets leave little room for those new sweaters, sweat suits and pajamas that came swaddled in bright colored wrapping. The kids’ toy box probably was overflowing before the overindulgent grandparents showed up. And those holiday decorations somehow multiplied and refuse to go back into the storage containers they came out of.

It’s triage time for your stuff.

First, figure out what’s broken, torn, or otherwise damaged beyond repair and put it out for the trash collectors. Check your local regulations for the disposal of home chemical or electronic trash.

If the season’s first snowfall has always meant a frantic search for that long-forgotten snow shovel, it might be necessary to organize your garage.

But if you find your garage filled with clutter and items you’ve been saving for years,

you’re not alone. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that 25 percent of people with two-car garages don’t have room to park any cars inside, and 32 percent only have room for one vehicle.

We asked Sabrina Soto, host of “Get It Sold” on HGTV, for her best garage organization tips. We caught up with her when she took a break from shopping for items for the taping of her show in Washington, D.C.

“First, you have to figure out what you have,” Soto says. “Today people aren’t just

using their garage for cars. It’s for seasonal storage and tools. Even stuff people don’t want in their house, they move it to their garage.

Save By Remodeling During Winter

FAIRFAX, Va. – For many, winter is the time to hunker down with the TV remote and watch some basketball or football, or to cook up some toasty fun in the kitchen.

But maybe it should be the time when you’re planning your next home remodeling project.

“January is really the time to redo your basement or plan your kitchen renovation,” says Tom Vitale, owner of Oak Hill Building & Remodeling/VCI Inc. in Fairfax, Va.

Yes, you can actually save money remodeling the downstairs into the perfect lower level, man-cave media room where the guys hang out with a brew and armchair quarterback.

“The savings can be 10 to 15 percent this time of year for any type of interior remodeling job, whether it’s a basement, a kitchen or a bathroom,” says Vitale.

If you are like most people who have a garage, you’ve wondered if there was a more effective way to use the existing space surrounding your vehicle or vehicles. Unfortunately, some people find once they use up existing space on the ground by their vehicles, they can’t put any more storage items in their garage. Or, over time, they stack so many items in the garage that they can no longer fit both vehicles into their traditional two-car garage.

“Why would you spend $35,000 on a vehicle and then store $2,000 worth of junk and leave the $35,000 vehicle out in the weather,” asked Doug Madsen, co-owner of Gorgeous Garages of Utah in St. George.

The Frugal Garage

In my neighborhood, all of the houses have two car garages. What amazes me is how few people use their garages for their intended purpose. When I go out for a run, I see so many garage doors open and the garages are full of stuff, not cars. There is barely room to walk in some of them, so crammed are they with junk. I guess part of the problem is that these houses were built without basements or attics so there’s no place to store the overflow of junk that most people have.

If you have a garage full of stuff and no room to put your cars, you might want to give some thought to cleaning it out and putting your cars in it. Using the garage as a garage rather than a storage facility has actually saved us money over the years. Aside from removing the eyesore of clutter, cleaning out your garage and parking your cars in it might save you some money, too. Here are some ways that using your garage as a garage, rather than a storage facility can save you some money.

Reading an article in Garage Style magazine featuring Leno’s custom-built garage in Burbank, Calif., Randy Nelson, president and owner of Swisstrax Corp., saw the garage flooring and decided he had to help out with setting up a better garage floor to compliment the renowned car collection.

With the assistance from Don Weberg of Garage Style magazine, Randy was able to set a meeting with Leno and part of the garage team. He first met up with Mr. Bernard Juchli, a native Swiss, and Leno’s “mechanical genius.” Juchli was kind enough to grant Swisstrax a chance to meet with Leno and install some car pads in the Big Dog Garage.
